Muslim Support Network president, co-founder named Woman of the Year
By InFocus News Staff

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Moina Shaiq, co-founder and president of the Muslim Support Network, was honored last month as the Woman of the Year in the Tenth Senate District.
“Moina is an incredible woman who has dedicated her life to her family and community,” said Sen. Ellen Corbett (D-San Leandro) in making the announcement. “She is an inspiration to so many people and continues to show the importance of investing in our local communities.”
Shaiq was a small business owner for 10 years, running a computer sales business, after which she got involved in community affairs. She is currently the chair of the Human Relations Commission for the city of Fremont, vice president of the Tri-City Homeless Coalition, a board member of the Washington Hospital Foundation, and a member of the Fremont Alliance for a Hate Free Community.
“When I got the call from Sen. Corbett, I felt very overwhelmed and humbled on getting this recognition,” Shaiq said. “My goal is to work toward the common good of the community.”
The MSN works to improve the health and well-being of Fremont residents with the goal to help provide language and cultural outreach, transportation, health and mental health services.
Shaiq and her husband, Mohammad, live in Fremont and have four children.
