MPAC Calls on Al-Jazeera to stop spreading Islamophobia

LOS ANGELES -- The Al-Jazeera network issued an apology for its controversial decision to invite a widely discredited Islamophobe on a popular current affairs program.
The apology comes after “The Opposite Direction” hosted Wafa Sultan, alongside an unknown Muslim cleric.
“This apology is irrelevant and misses the point,” said MPAC Senior Advisor Dr. Maher Hathout.  “As believers in free speech, the idea of debate and introducing different perspectives is acceptable and encouraged.  Yet those who are invited to debate on such an important forum should be qualified and up to the task.”
Despite three appearances on Al-Jazeera on issues of Islam and Muslims, Sultan is no scholar of Islam, comparative religion or political theory. Instead, MPAC said she routinely insults and debases Muslims and everything they hold sacred.
In a press release, MPAC called on Al-Jazeera to provide “real answers about its editorial approach rather than politically correct apologies.”

TCF works for education in Pakistan

LOS ANGELES – About 200 people gathered at the Wilshire Grand Hotel for The Citizens Foundation Fundraiser on March 22.  The attendees and organizers were enthusiastic and took pride in this organization’s noble goal — to build and operate schools in the urban and rural areas of Pakistan.
“Education is a right, not a privilege,” said Danial Noorani, President of TCF.
It was a feeling continually echoed throughout the night and many in attendance said this belief is their motivation.
Since TCF’s creation eleven years ago, 455 schools have been built, serving 60,000 children.
Sarah Kapadia, the master of ceremonies, said that she and her fiancé felt so passionate about this cause that they asked their wedding guests to donate to TCF instead of giving gifts to them.
Well-known Pakistani singer Sohail Rana also performed at the event.

RAWDAH Conference: A personal reflection

Often times, people associate the word “tasawuf” or “sufism” with Muslims whose religious practices are unorthodox and deviant from traditional Sunni Islam.  Unfortunately, I too was a victim of such beliefs.  Alhamdulillah, I had an opportunity to attend the RAWDAH conference March 7-9 in San Diego, which helped me understand the true essence of tasawuf and its significance in Islam.
