Dunkin’ Donuts pulls ad showing Rachael Ray wearing ‘kaffiyeh’

CANTON, Mass. -- Dunkin’ Donuts has canceled an online advertisement featuring celebrity chef Rachael Ray after complaints that a scarf she wore in the ad offers symbolic support for terrorism.

Dunkin’ Donuts said it pulled the ad because of what it calls a "misperception" about the scarf that detracted from its original intent to promote its iced coffee.

Congressmen want nation to help stop Darfur violence

WASHINGTON — Congress’ two Muslim members urged the U.S. government on May 14 to lead efforts to end the violence in Sudan’s Darfur region, where more than 200,000 people have died and 2.5 million have been displaced.

Muslim leaders unhappy with ‘homegrown terrorism’ report

WASHINGTON – Four of the country’s leading Muslim-American and Arab-American advocacy groups issued a joint letter on May 14 expressing strong reservations about a recently released Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee report on "homegrown terrorism."

The report, issued jointly by Committee Chairman Joe Lieberman (I-CT) and ranking member Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME), concludes that the threat posed by violent extremists now comes more and more from inside America’s borders.

Coach loses job amid concerns over religion

DEARBORN, Mich. — A longtime high school wrestling coach has lost his job amid concerns a former assistant coach tried to convert Muslim students to Christianity.

Coach Jerry Marszalek’s contract with Fordson High School was not renewed. The decision was supported by hundreds of parents, who packed a Board of Education meeting on May 27 to support Principal Imad Fadlallah’s decision.

Women allege factory fired them for wearing hijab

MINNEAPOLIS – A group of Muslim workers claim they were fired by a New Brighton, Minn. tortilla factory for refusing to wear uniforms rather than their traditional loose-fitting skirts and scarves.

Six Somali women claim they were ordered by a manager to wear pants and shirts they considered immodest by Islamic standards, the Council on American-Islamic Relations said May 27. The women have filed a religious discrimination complaint with the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
