Mother fights for son to be placed with Muslim foster family
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – A single mother is appealing a 2005 court decision that resulted in her toddler’s adoption by a non-Muslim family.

Social Services separated Anthony Ismail from his mother, Niveen, when he was 3 years old after a neighbor notified authorities that his mother had left him home alone.

Habitat for Humanity gives Muslim family new home
SANTA ANA, Calif. – After more than 250 hours of volunteering their time building homes for others, members of an Orange County Muslim family were given the keys to a new home of their own.

The Usman family is the first Muslim family aided by the Christian philanthropic organization, Habitat for Humanity International. "I’m very devoted to helping families become homeowners," said Chaplain Sheryl Faulk of MemorialCare, which worked in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity on the project. "I feel blessed that we can empower them to reach for their goals."

Muslim astronaut speaks at Islamic Shura Council banquet

GARDEN GROVE, Calif. – On Oct. 10, 2007, Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor became the first Malaysian to go to space. The Muslim astronaut was also the first to fast and celebrate Eid in space.

"Ever since I was 10, I’ve wanted to go to space, to know what it’s like out there," Shukor said.

Muslims students will be allowed to graduate before school eviction
FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif. – Students at the California Science Academy will be graduating on June 13 despite an eviction notice by the Fountain Valley School District directing them to vacate the school by May 19 because of unpaid rent.

"The board of trustees is doing its utmost to get the rent paid on time," said Abdul-Rahman Obeid, a school board member. "We’ve paid more than $64,000, and we’re behind by $13,000."

Former pop star shares personal reflections at IOK fundraiser
GARDEN GROVE, Calif. – A sellout crowd of 1,000 people was treated to a reflective journey by former Pakistani pop icon Junaid Jamshed during a well-organized fundraiser for the Institute of Knowledge on May 31.

At the height of his career, Jamshed turned his back on the world of glitz and glamour and devoted himself to Islam. The former singer for the group Vital Signs performed beautiful nasheeds in his native Urdu language, interspersed with little anecdotes in Urdu and English describing various stops along his personal journey. Jamshed kept the audience’s attention for an entertaining and inspirational two hours.

Presidential hopefuls reach out to Asian American community
IRVINE, Calif. – The three presidential candidates reached out to the Asian-American community during the first-ever Asian and Pacific Islander American Vote Presidential Town Hall meeting at UC Irvine on May 17.

The event was held in hopes of encouraging members of the Asian community to vote and become more aware of the candidates’ views on issues that were pertinent to them.
