Racism and political Islamophobia

This presidential election is historic, partly because one candidate is African-American (and one vice-presidential candidate a woman), but also because it’s the first time Islamophobia was used extensively in national politics. It began in the Democratic primaries, with viral e-mails suggesting that Barack Obama was a secret Muslim. According to some well-researched articles in "The Nation," the e-mail operation began in 2004 with a notorious anti-Semite in Chicago whose intent was to cause Jewish voters to distrust Obama.
