Around 637 AD, a strong Muslim army that had laid siege for months on end in Jerusalem eventually ended the Byzantine rule there. However, Orthodox Christian patriarch Sophronius refused to hand over the key of the city except to the Caliph Omar Ibn Al-Khattab himself. Under strict orders from his Commander-in-Chief, the Muslim general did not force his way into the city but rather dispatched a messenger to Medina, the capital city of the fledgling Caliphate. Against all odds, Omar, the second Caliph who ruled from 634-644 AD, decided to undertake the long journey in the company of just one servant. During the arduous trip, Omar would alternate riding a single mule with the servant.

In 2004, a Progressive Muslim movement swept into mainstream North American press and claimed to stand up for the “moderate majority” of Muslims. Yet, less than three years later the same “moderate majority” has almost completely sidelined the Progressive Muslim community. Even those who previously identified themselves as Progressive Muslims do not now wish to be so affiliated. The flagship organization of the movement Progressive Muslim Union of North America has lost almost 90% of its board members.

When Senator Barbara Boxer withdrew her "Certificate of Accomplishment" from Basim Elkarra, the director of the Sacramento Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), it raised a firestorm of controversy within the interfaith community. But her behavior afterwards was just as disturbing. Agreeing to meet with CAIR, Boxer refused to respond to their emailed suggestions for discussion. Instead she insisted that the incident was over—then made sure the wounds would stay open. After the meeting, Boxer told the Associated Press that she still had "concerns" about CAIR, but didn’t say what they were. How can you address concerns if you don’t know what they are?
