BEIJING — Members of a Muslim minority group in far-western China have been ordered to hand over their passports to police in a government effort to prevent them from making a pilgrimage to Mecca, an activist said. Uighurs in Xinjiang province were ordered to surrender their passports about two months ago, Dilxat Raxit, spokesman for the Germany-based World Uighur Congress, said in a telephone interview Thursday. Passports that were not turned in would be voided, he said. |

BAGHDAD – Up to eight million Iraqis require immediate emergency aid, with nearly half of the population living in "absolute poverty," according to a report by Oxfam and a coalition of Iraqi groups. About four million people are lacking food and "in dire need of different types of humanitarian assistance", said the report, released in Amman on July 30. "Iraqis are suffering from a growing lack of food, shelter, water and sanitation, health care, education, and employment," said the report, compiled by Oxfam and the NGO Co-ordination Committee in Iraq (NCCI). |

DOHA, Qatar – The Hamas political chief has criticized the US president’s blanket support for rival Palestinian faction Fatah. Khaled Meshaal told Al Jazeera on July 17 that "the US is trying to impose its agenda on the region." Meshaal said Bush, who called on Palestinians to endorse president Mahmoud Abbas and reject Hamas, was supporting Fatah with cash and weapons. |
