Women lead the way at Walnut mosque fundraiser, donating thousands Print E-mail
By InFocus Staff

ANAHEIM, Calif. – While those in attendance fondly recalled cherished memories during the Islamic Center of San Gabriel Valley’s Silver Jubilee Anniversary on Aug. 17 at the Knotts Berry Farm Hotel in Anaheim, nearly a half-million dollars was raised at the event, a sure sign that the community is looking ahead to the next 25 years.

Imam Siraj Wahaj from New York was on hand to help motivate the crowd of 500 to donate toward the plans for a larger facility to serve the community.

The guests responded loud and clear – especially the women.

"I’ve never seen anything like this," said a jubilant Imam Siraj as women raised their hands one after another, committing to give between $5,000 and $50,000 each.

Past religious directors of the Islamic Center of San Gabriel Valley were present, including Dr. Ahmad Sakr and Mowlana Mohammed Asif, as well as current religious director, Sheikh Said Seddouk, also known as Sheikh Abul Haitem.

Imam Rodwan Saleh from Houston delivered the keynote address.

Located in Rowland Heights, the center offers a wide variety of educational services to the Muslim community, including classes for children and sisters.

The center’s officials also organize many events such as carnivals and other cultural programs.

The funds raised will be used toward expansion of the center and a to build a new school.
