LOS ANGELES – Twenty-five youth from across Southern California attended the first annual Southern California Young Muslim Leaders Summit that was held by the Muslim Public Affairs Council in Los Angeles.
The event, intended to provide an opportunity for young Muslims leaders to engage with members of government, media and civic groups was held over two days, August 27 and 28. Among the activities, the youth met with such officials such Deputy Mayor of Los Angeles Arif Ali Khan, Robin Toma, Executive Director of the Los Angeles County Commission on Human Relations, and Lisa Kalustian, L.A. Chief Deputy Director for Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. They also met with the Los Angeles Times Publisher David Hiller and the editorial staff of the L.A. Times and with Fox Studios about their work in diversifying their shows and research in presenting dynamic Middle Eastern and Muslim characters. "I learned … that there are other Muslim youth in the area that are committed to civic engagement and improving the future of Muslims in America," said Muhammad Abdullah Choudhery, 16, an attendee from Northridge Academy High School. The participating youth were selected through recommendations by community members and leaders. |
