MISSION VIEJO, Calif – As part of Muslim American Society Youth Give’s goal to encourage environmental reform in the community, 18 of its members gave hands-on effort to restore the native habitat in Jeronimo Creek, Mission Viejo, on December 12.
Jeronimo Creek, an underdeveloped wild life area, contains plants, such as weeds, that are not native to the area and were transported by birds and wind. As a result, these non-native species compete with the native species, harming the environment. Youth ranging from ages 8 to 18 educated themselves and their community about the problem and then went onsite to usurp the non-native plants in the creek. Using weed pullers and their hands, they spent time doing what organizers said Muslims are supposed to do as part of their faith. "By being Muslims, we try to contribute to society. We want to be the first Muslims to be involved and step up," organizer Tarek Gadd said. At the event, MAS Youth Give also worked toward accomplishing another goal – to have Muslim youth integrated in American life; other volunteers such as students from a national honor society also joined the efforts and worked alongside the Muslim youth. This month, MAS Youth and Islamic Relief will be distributing meat to the needy at four locations.
