What are the most important issues in this year’s election? Print E-mail
By GHALIA MOHDER, Staff Writer

With the elections coming up, concerns about the war on Iraq, the U.S. economy, health care and immigration are being discussed. InFocus decided to ask Muslims what they feel is the most important issue for this year’s election.

"The war on Iraq is the most important issue this election. Enough blood has been shed. Staying there is only going to cause more chaos. The next president has the responsibility to bring the troops home." (Medina Latif, 22, Irvine)

"My No. 1 concern is the rebirth of our economy. We need to restore the middle class and establish better wages so there is an increased chance of survival for families. It’s especially difficult now for one-income households." (Nimar Attakim, 37, Compton)

"Domestically, I would say universal health care needs to be established since a great number of people are uninsured. As a civilized country, we need to take care of our basic social needs, including health care and education. Internationally, the war on Iraq is a primary concern. The refugee situation is concerning. The U.S promised to accept 6,000 refugees from Iraq and only accepted 3,000. Syria, a country that is not involved in the war, is bearing the burden of over 2.2 million Iraqi refugees. Syria cannot sustain these numbers as resources are scarce and the problem is only going to get worse if the U.S. does not pull itself out of the Middle East." (May Al-hassen, 25, Columbia)

"My concern for this election is that neither the Republican nor Democratic Party [is] taking a strong stance against torture, closing Guantanamo Bay, or constructively re-visiting the war on terror." (Ali Mir, 27, Culver City)

"Foreign policy in the Middle East is the most important issue. There needs to be more balanced decision that is good universally, not just serving Israeli interests." (Ali Ghazal, 17, Los Angeles)

"Universal health care and immigration are my main concerns in this election. As a green card holder, I would like to see immigration problems resolved as soon as possible. I also believe that health care should not be a luxury. It’s a social necessity that needs to be addressed by the government." (Jaffar Osman, 17, Los Angeles)

"Foreign policy in the Middle East is the most important concern this election. We need more humanitarian efforts to resolve the current crisis created. I definitely feel that the next president needs to bring the troops home. Enough damage has been done." (Ashar Shah, 24, Rancho Cucamonga)

"The most important concern is to end the wars and establish peace. Also, the economy needs to be improved. Gas prices are extremely high and there need to be restrictions to try to create a healthier economy. Finally, I feel that health care is also an important issue, and more should be done to provide essential care to the elderly and to children." (Ghada Murad Agha, 60, San Diego)

"I think immigration is the most important issue, especially regarding the refugee problem." (Halima Aden, 50, San Diego)
