LOS ANGELES - As the Muslims heard the call to the last daily prayer of the day on the evening of Feb. 17 at the Islamic Center of Southern California. individuals from various cultures and backgrounds were welcomed by Jihad Turk, Director of Religious Affairs at ICSC.
To follow was a concert of Sufi Sacred music from the Turkish and Pakistani Sufi traditions and devotional music from the Moroccan-Jewish and Yemenite-Jewish music heritages. Performing were The Yuval Ron Ensemble, with an appearance of the Whirling Dervish of the Mevlevi Order, Aziz, and featuring the Arabic vocalist Najwa Gibran. The Yuval Ron ensemble collected on the stage in the main hall. The sacred music began. Yuval Ron, speaking for the group of artists, accompanied each score with history, explanations of the instruments, spiritual stories and comments. The children were the first to notice as the greatly anticipated dervish approached. The audience watched as the dervish turned. The story of Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi searching for his teacher Shams-e-Tabrīzī was told as the dervish rose in speed and consistent movement until the final crescendo. Returning to a still state, the dervish prayed as the next devotional score began, leaving to return later. Audience participation increased as the evening progressed, culminating with a standing audience singing and clapping in-sync with a row of children who were welcomed to the stage. This was in line with the Yuval Ron Ensemble’s mission of "uniting the music and dance of the opposing people of the Middle East into a unique mystical, spiritual and inspiring musical celebration." |
