Islamic school honors African-American heritage month Print E-mail
By FAWAD YACOOB, Contributing Writer

GARDEN GROVE, Calif. -- The Orange Crescent School marked its second Annual African-American Heritage Month Celebration with a variety of programming focused on education, activism and community outreach. Events included guest speakers, field trips, movie screenings, class discussions, and a school-wide contest plus lots more.

OCS students participated in activities and discussions throughout the month to recognize the trials and tribulations African-Americans endured throughout their history. Classes learned about the history of the slavery, the Civil Rights Movement and focused on the journey of Islam from Africa to America.

Among the visitors to OCS during the month included Shaikh Yassir Fazaga, the resident Imam of the Orange County Islamic Foundation in Mission Viejo and Naim Shah, Jr., Director of the Ilm Foundation based in Los Angeles. Both talked about the importance of the roots of the African-American experience and its Islamic influence.

Writer, poet and activist Donald Bakeer stopped by the school to speak about the importance of the transformation of African-Americans from their original religious traditions to the Nation of Islam and into mainstream Islam. Bakeer’s book, "South Central LA Crips," was made into a movie in 1992.

On Feb. 24, the students were treated to a special appearance and performance by Naim Mohammad of the group Native Deen. Earlier in the month, 7th and 8th graders went on a day-long field trip, with stops at the Magic Johnson Theatres in Los Angeles to watch the select documentaries and short films from the African-American Film Festival, and then later following afternoon prayers at Masjid Omar ibn Al-Khattab, the students visited the California African-American Museum.
