A feast fit for a king Print E-mail
By OMAR and OWAIZ DADABHOY, Guest Writers
If, like us, the gastronome in you is excited by the prospect of an entire buffet-style halal restaurant filled with your favorite Chinese dishes, then we recommend you try King Buffet in Corona.

Located in a large shopping center on McKinley Street near the 91 freeway, King Buffet looks like your typical Chinese restaurant. In fact, it was only until six months ago that it was.

However, now under new Muslim ownership, all dishes are prepared with halal ingredients.

Inside, you will find large dining areas, typical of buffet-style restaurants, with private dining rooms and a welcoming family atmosphere.

You will also be served by a very seasoned and friendly staff.

We were very pleased to be seated almost immediately upon entering; our beverages came minutes later and our many empty plates were removed in a timely manner.

Once you make your way to the buffet area, you will find a wide variety of Chinese, Japanese and Mongolian barbecue dishes.

Among our favorite main dishes was the orange chicken.

The chicken was cooked to a slight crisp, yet was able to maintain the tenderness of the underlying chicken.

It was also enhanced by the use of aromatics and a sweet and pungent sauce.

Another favorite was the mushroom chicken because of the juiciness of the mushrooms and the rich flavors of the accompanying sauce.

The chicken with broccoli was also packed with flavor, and the chicken was tender with a texture commonly found in local Chinese restaurants.

But what stole the show were the flavorful and abundant side dishes. We recommend you don’t pass up the juicy and tender chicken wings, savory cheese mussels, tasty fried dumplings and rich butter potatoes.

For the younger diners in our party, we found that King Buffet offered pizza, fries, chicken strips and chicken nuggets.

The Mongolian barbecue is prepared in front of you with the ingredients of your choice. Also available are a variety of sushi dishes, but you can get fresh sushi by a chef specializing in that area at any sushi bar.

With such a wide array of other halal menu items to choose from at King Buffet, we suggest taking advantage of that.

Many times in our lives we’ve eaten at buffet-style restaurants where we’ve had to pass up all of the chicken and beef dishes that were calling out to us.

Part of the experience was being able to select any dish and feel comfortable with the fact that we were eating halal.

While the majority of dishes met or exceeded our expectations, a common downside of a buffet is that freshness can vary from item to item.

We believe this could be addressed by eliminating a few dishes and focusing on the more popular items. This may also help in another area, which was the warmth of the food. While still enjoyable, we found that some items were only lukewarm.

A few tweaks such as this — along with the comfortable and clean environment, friendly staff and reasonable prices — and this restaurant could go from good to great!
