Coach loses job amid concerns over religion Print E-mail
By News Agencies
DEARBORN, Mich. — A longtime high school wrestling coach has lost his job amid concerns a former assistant coach tried to convert Muslim students to Christianity.

Coach Jerry Marszalek’s contract with Fordson High School was not renewed. The decision was supported by hundreds of parents, who packed a Board of Education meeting on May 27 to support Principal Imad Fadlallah’s decision.

Marszalek, who has coached at Fordson for 35 years, says people have been concerned about contacts between the team and former assistant coach, the Rev. Trey Hancock of the Dearborn Assembly of God.

Hancock says he has attempted conversions but never while coaching at the school, which has a large Muslim population.

Marszalek said he does not plan to take any legal action. He said he was already retired and was only coaching part-time. He said he will miss the students but wants to put the issue behind him.
