YOGYAKARTA, Indonesia – American Muslims are now quite familiar with Humanitarian Day, the annual event founded by the Los Angeles-based ILM Foundation, where the members of the Coalition to Preserve Human Dignity come together to help the homeless.
After expanding internationally for the first time last year with an event in Ghana, ILM held its first Humanitarian Day in Indonesia this year.
Indonesia has the largest Muslim population in the world. However, many live earning less than $2 a day, according to the organization. Humanitarian Day-Indonesia concluded with the distribution of gift items to the orphan survivors of the 2004 tsunami.
During the second Annual Humanitarian Day-Ghana, Shaikh Ayub Haroun, ILM’s Islamic Studies director and chairman of the Bureau of Social Service in Ghana, helped transform H-Day into a week of projects that included more than 200 free breast cancer screenings, mosque construction, community feedings and educational seminars.
Collectively, the Humanitarian Day effort in 2008 served approximately 10,000 needy people. ILM’s goal for 2009 is to reach a landmark figure of 100,000.
