FREMONT, Calif. -- A 28-year-old man has been charged with murder in the shooting death of Alia Ansari, an Afghanistan-born mother of six who was walking to school to pick up her children.
Ansari, 38, died Oct. 19 when a gunman pulled up in a car and fired at her before driving away. Her body was found outside a home near the sidewalk. Her 3-year-old child witnessed the shooting, but was unharmed.
Hours after she was killed, police arrested Manuel David Mares, whom they described at the time as "a person of interest." He was arraigned on a single murder charge Thursday, according to Fremont Police
Detective Bill Veteran.
Mares, who has been in custody since the incident, was being held on a parole violation for a previous hit-and-run conviction, Veteran said.
Police don’t yet have a motive for the killing, but a hate crime remains a possibility, he said. Some community members believe Ansari was targeted because she was wearing a hijab when she was shot.
