Dear Scholar: Could you please explain the concept of performing Hajj on behalf of someone else? A friend of mine already did Hajj many years ago but she went again this year, she says so she could do it for her deceased parents. Is this possible? If so, is it valid for other Islamic rituals as well?
---
Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh. Thank you for sending us this inquiry about Hajj. It has been agreed upon by numerous Muslim scholars that a Muslim may perform Hajj on behalf of another Muslim, whether deceased or alive, so long as the one who will be performing the Hajj has already performed Hajj at least once in his lifetime on his own behalf. That is the only pre-requisite that is required and must be fulfilled prior to accepting an invitation to perform Hajj on behalf of another.
As for our Muslim sisters in Islam, a female may also perform Hajj on behalf of another and most definitely for her deceased parents. Of course, the pre-requisite is the same for her as for the brothers; she may perform Hajj for her parents as long as she has already performed Hajj at least once in her life on her own behalf.
It is highly encouraged to offer Sadaqa, Zakat, Udhiya, and perpetual Du`aa’ Maghfira (forgiveness) on behalf of your deceased parents. Rituals performed by a child on behalf of a deceased parent are among the few blessings that continue to count in the book of the deceased even after they have passed.
