DETROIT – The Detroit Board of Police Commissioners this week passed a resolution calling for an independent investigation into the Oct. 28 FBI fatal shooting of Imam Luqman Ameen Abdullah. Also, earlier this month, the U.S. Justice Department announced that it will conduct an investigation into the shooting incident.
Advocacy groups such as the Michigan office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI) and House Judiciary Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) have been urging an impartial review of the imam’s shooting.
The actions of the DOJ and the police board of commissioners follow a much delayed release of Abdullah’s autopsy report that showed he was shot at least 20 times, including once in the back.
The autopsy also shows lacerations to the body. The Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office found Abdullah’s body handcuffed behind his back, after the FBI shooting on Oct. 28.
The autopsy report was completed in November but its release was delayed by the examiner’s office following a request by the Dearborn Police Department in which it said that releasing the autopsy report would jeopardize its own investigation of the shooting.
CAIR-Michigan has filed several Freedom of Information Act requests to review surveillance videos of the raid which subsequently led to the Imam’s killing, in addition to requests for the necropsy of the FBI dog which the FBI claims was shot by the Imam, and autopsy photos. |
