A passenger plane carrying 130 people crashed in a mountainous area in southern China on Monday afternoon.

China’s first news report quoted local officials as saying that a Boeing 737 operated by China Eastern Airlines had crashed in the Guangxi region and that fire and smoke could be seen rising from a mountain.

“Currently a rescue team is assembled and approaching,” an online statement from Chinese state television said. “The situation of the victims is not clear.”

Preliminary reports say the plane crashed in Deng County, Guangxi, while flying from Kunming in southwest China to the southern city of Guangzhou. The plane was carrying 132 people, including 123 passengers and 9 crew. Said the paperA news website in Shanghai.

The footage, shared by Chinese Internet users, showed flames in a densely wooded mountain range, while explosions erupted, but the location of the footage was unclear.

After a series of deadly accidents in the 1990s, the accident could turn into one of China’s worst aviation disasters in years. For the past two decades, the country has established a relatively safe flying record, thanks to young aircraft and strict air restrictions.
