Representative of the State of South Carolina. Russell Fry will win the GOP nomination for the 7th congressional district, CNN projects.
After the January 6, 2021 uprising in the U.S. Capitol, Fry ran against Tom Rice, a five-term House Rep., One of the 10 House Republicans who voted to oust former President Donald Trump. Recognized by Trump, Fry said voters would “impeach” Rice “in the ballot box.”
Rice, the first Conservative Republican to be elected in 2012, was formally censored by the South Carolina Republican after his dismissal vote. The legislature said in a statement last year that the president’s response to the riots had led him to cross the aisle.
He was one of 35 Republicans who voted to form a commission to investigate Capitol’s attack.
In support of Fry in February, Trump said in a statement that Rice was “a coward who abandoned his constituencies in disgust to Nancy Pelosi and the far left” and “should be thrown out of office.”
Rice responded that Trump was a “tyrant” and that he was “despicable.”
Fry appeared with Trump at a rally in the state in March, arguing that Rice had “broken our trust” by his dismissal vote.
